What might sustainable business models look like? The ‘sufficiency-based business model’ is about solutions that actively seek to reduce consumption and production: what if we bought less, bought stuff that lasts long, and looked after our stuff? What if businesses made it possible for its customers to do this? The proverb ‘I am not rich enough to buy cheap things’ applies here. This business model requires both a shift in consumer behaviour and a shift in producer responsibility, which is why this is probably not yet widespread. Still, ‘sufficiency’ and making stuff last is not new and quite ‘retro’, which can make this a new trend again.
